Dexter Gordon - Swiss Nights Vol. 1-3 [FLAC]

The first of three volumes taken from the 1975 Zurich Jazz Festival features tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon (with his reliable sidemen pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Niels Pedersen and drummer Alex Riel) stretching out on "Tenor Madness," "Wave," "You've Changed" and "Days of Wine and Roses." All of the performances are at least ten minutes long and there are some rambling moments, but in general, the music is quite rewarding. This was one of Dexter Gordon's prime periods.

Dexter would be very happy to know that his Columbia recordings have been reissued by Sony Legacy / PopMarket. This box set represents a very important period in Dexter Gordon’s career, and an important stage in jazz history. Dexter’s return from Europe after 14 years residing there helped rekindle a new level of enthusiasm in the jazz world, a wave of excitement that many other musicians benefited from. Dexter also won a number of Downbeat Critics and Readers Poll Awards during this period, and two Grammy nominations for Homecoming and Sophisticated Giant, respectively. These recordings on Columbia, signed off on by then-President Bruce Lundvall, also facilitated a reunion of sorts between many musicians who might not have otherwise ever recorded together or been featured collectively within the same release, the likes of which included: Tony Williams, Slide Hampton, Frank Wess, Stan Getz, Hubert Laws, Jimmy Heath, Eddie Gladden, Billy Brooks, Ronnie Matthews, Stafford James, Louis Hayes, Art Blakey, and others.

Dexter Gordon - Soul Sister (2022/FLAC)

 In September 1962, Dexter Gordon  left for Europe, and two months later he was recorded at the Metropole Jazz Centre in Oslo, Norway. In February 1963, he appeared in concert in Copenhagen, Denmark, and was recorded by Danish radio. These two dates were released on Soul Sister by SteepleChase Records.

Dexter Gordon - Mosaic Select 14 (3 CD, 2004/FLAC)

 Nights at the Keystone dates from a couple of years after Dexter Gordon had returned triumphantly to America (1978-79). He took strong solos on several lengthy performances. One can fault the occasional excess of song quotes (especially "Laura," which seemed to pop up in every solo) but Gordon's authoritative sound, freshness of ideas and confident explorations easily compensated. Pianist George Cables was often in dazzling form (check out "Tangerine") and was continually inventive. Bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Eddie Gladden were perfect in support. In addition, the ambience of the late, lamented Keystone Korner, San Francisco's top jazz club and possessor of one of the most knowledgeable jazz audiences anywhere, can be felt. Mosaic has packaged all three volumes into a single box as number 14 in its limited-edition Select Series. It features gorgeously remastered sound, original sequencing, and a 16-page booklet with copious notes and full session information. 

Dexter Gordon - The Complete Prestige Recordings [11 CD, 2004]

 

While it's unquestionably true that saxophonist Dexter Gordon is best known for his Blue Note sides made between 1960 and 1965, it is on his Prestige recordings, the vast majority of which were taped between 1969 and 1973, where the full depth and breadth of his gift and contribution are documented. What's more, this box finally sets the historical and chronological record straight as many of Gordon's records were assembled from various sessions. The Complete Prestige Recordings consists of 11 CDs, charting Gordon's rise as a soloist in 1950 as part of the With Wardell Gray memorial album, and his reemergence after a period of drug addiction and imprisonment in 1960 with the album Resurgence.
